ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Mohammed Bey is an in-depth leader and guide in areas of inclusion, identity development, diversity, leadership, and various inspirational principles. A native of Chicago, Ill., Mohammed experienced a great deal of tragedy and triumph that eventually led to his philosophy of self-ownership and personal responsibility.

Mohammed experienced an epiphany that led to the reexamination of his life, values, and personal goals. From a life of crime, homelessness, and tragedy, he has emerged as a true leader and inspiration, proving that you are in charge of your destiny. For years Mohammed has been sharing his personal story, reflections on life, and makes the call for personal accountability and development with the various audiences he encounters.

Before Mohammed’s collegiate career in 2000 and after he graduated from college, he spent time working at companies like Chilton Products, Kohler Company, Wells Manufacturing, CR Meyer, etc.  In 2006, Mohammed transitioned into higher education and began working at Lawrence University. From there, his journey led him to UW-Oshkosh and Quinnipiac University. As their Director for Multicultural Education, his focus was on the development and implementation of diversity and inclusion workshops and presentations (LGBT, Cultural Competence, Religious Competence, etc.) for faculty, staff and students; to oversee the Anti-bias Education Committee; coordinate the intergroup dialogue program; and assist with the sustainability of the University’s diversity strategic plan.

In 2014, Mohammed came back to the Midwest for an opportunity at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. As the Director of Diversity and Inclusion / Title IX Coordinator, his role is to articulate equity and to develop a vision for diversity and inclusion, as well as monitor and implement all phases of College’s Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action, and Title IX programs to ensure local, state, and federal requirements are met.  Lastly, Mohammed also worked as a motivational speaker from 2002-2012. He founded Bey Community Consulting to apply personal and academic tools to bring forth the power of individuality and value connection. He worked in partnership with individuals and organizations to uncover the potential in each person. Leadership development, personal consulting, identity, multicultural insight, inspirational speaking, and group facilitation were some areas of expertise.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

Got bias? I imagine you do. The human brain is such a powerful system for navigating and processing our environment. At the same time, it can also be a source of conflict and miscommunication – especially in the workplace. As HR Practitioners, awareness about your tendencies toward unconscious bias and stereotyping can alleviate many conflicts before they start and help you with efforts to recruit, hire, retain, and develop top talent. This session will guide participants through a reflective and interactive conversation around unconscious bias and stereotypes, their potentially negative effects, and how to bring the biases that negatively impact your work to the conscious level.
